ROBERT WHITING is an author and journalist who has written several acclaimed books on contemporary Japanese culture. You Gotta Have Wa (1989) was a Pulitzer Prize finalist; Tokyo Underworld (1999), an account of the corrupt side of US-Japan relations, was a bestseller in Japan.
